Special Quality Alloys Ltd (SQA) is a family owned manufacturer of forgings, rolled rings, bar and machined products. Industries served include oil and gas, power generation and emerging renewables markets.

The team is proud to have been honoured with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise – International Trade for a three-year period, during which international sales increased by 87% and now constitute 44% of total sales.

Part of the Special Steel Group, SQA was established in 1986. Over recent years, it has seen a total transformation from material converter to established manufacturer of forgings, with in-house forging and ring rolling capability. By combining a highly skilled and committed workforce and technical metallurgy expertise to produce forgings to demanding industry requirements, it has sustained a strong reputation for quality, service and value.

The company has increased its UK manufacturing capabilities and global footprint, with a facility in Houston, Texas allowing expansion across the USA market. Additionally, it is supported by agents in Singapore and India. SQA prides itself on being a worldwide, multi-lingual enterprise, supplying 29 countries, including all major oilfields, petrochemical companies and valve OEMs.

SQA visits its international customers regularly to maintain and nurture relationships, gaining trust and confidence. This focus on the international sector has increased demand for its products, and this can clearly be measured, with customers ordering a high level of repeat parts. This business capture from the global markets has, in turn, allowed SQA to expand its business and increase employment.

Winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise – International Trade 2022 is a fantastic achievement, which provides new opportunities for the business to evolve. Sales Director Darren Pryce said: “Our aim is to be the preferred material supplier for forgings, which complements our full range of heat treated and tested bar, to a wide portfolio of markets across the globe. While we remain proud to offer products made in Sheffield, we are passionate about sharing our skills and knowledge with a wider audience and are very optimistic for the future.”
