Celebrating six awards since ’66
1966 was a momentous time in history: not only did England trigger one of the largest national celebrations ever witnessed by winning the World Cup, but it was the year Leyland Trucks secured its first Queen’s Award for Enterprise. Since then, the Lancashire based company has won five more, most recently in 2020 for International Trade.
Leyland’s rich manufacturing history stretches back to 1896, when two men – James Sumner and Henry Spurrier – formed ‘The Lancashire Steam Motor Company’ and built their first vehicle: a 1.5 tonne capacity steam van. The business today is underpinned by generations of truck-building expertise which remains unrivalled in this field.
Leyland Trucks is one of Britain’s leading manufacturing companies, and its skilled team of more than 1,000 employees operates from an advanced truck assembly facility in Lancashire. Here, the firm produces more than 7,500 DAF LF, CF, and XFs that are sold through the global DAF sales and service network. Leyland Trucks and DAF are part of PACCAR Inc, with facilities and dealers sited across six continents.
Leyland’s products are sold in 52 countries including Chile, the USA, South Africa, Israel, Taiwan, and Australia, with international sales accounting for more than a third of the business. The company has sales branches in 13 European countries, more than 1,000 dealers globally, and publish manuals in 39 languages. Within the UK, DAF products have been the market share leaders for commercial vehicles over 6T for 25 years.
In 2019, the XF won Motor Transport’s Fleet Truck of the Year; the LF won Commercial Fleet UK’s Truck of the Year, and DAF won Commercial Fleet UK’s Truck Manufacturer of the Year award.
The firm’s motto is ‘Quality Trucks Built by Quality People’. It is one the Leyland team is very proud of as it was bestowed upon them some years ago by a satisfied customer. It is the company’s goal to continue to exceed all expectations and they thank their suppliers, dealers and customers for their continued support.
Next year marks Leyland’s 125th birthday – a key milestone in its history, and yet another reason to celebrate. The team welcome you to become part of their rich heritage and help define their future.
