Temperature-controlled container specialist Tower Cold Chain has been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade, recognising the company’s outstanding short term growth in export sales made over the last three years.
It is 22 years since this multiaward- winning company’s founder John Pring filed his first patent for a reusable container to transport temperature sensitive pharmaceutical, life-science and biotech products.
Two decades on and Tower now supplies more than 30 of the world’s top pharmaceutical and third-party logistics companies with market-leading robust, reliable and reusable thermal containers.
Its portfolio of passive solutions can be configured to provide 120+ hours of product protection at temperatures ranging from <-60°C, -20°C, +4°C and +20°C, without requiring electricity or manual intervention.
Charting three years of substantial progress, which includes the opening of a new global headquarters, a health pandemic with the consequent demand for vaccine distribution, and multiple product launches, Tower Cold Chain’s ‘robust, reliable, reusable’ ethos has truly been embedded through all aspects of the business.
Just weeks after the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020, Tower Cold Chain received a second wave of new funding backed by Investec. Coming at a critical time when pharmaceutical logistics were needed more than ever before, Tower was able to prove its ability to distribute vaccines safely and securely, which needed to be stored at sub-zero temperatures.
Tower Cold Chain’s CEO, Niall Balfour, believes a key element of the business’ success has been the people at the heart of the business. From working closely with key stakeholders to realise challenges and requirements, to ensuring containers are readily available where customers are located.
“From the beginning, we have always recognised the complexity and challenges of the industry, and we meet this by investing in people,” says Niall. “Our specialist teams work closely with our customers, realising their requirements and asking how we can address emerging needs. Over 20 years later and we’re proud to continue to deliver value through customer-focused innovation.”
Recent examples of customer-led innovation have been with the launch of both the KTM42D for ultra-cold deliveries, and the KTEvolution, a lightweight, manually-handleable solution ideal for smaller shipments, such as direct-to-patient and last-mile deliveries.
It was clear that pharmaceutical manufacturers, 3PL providers and airlines value the consistency and stability that are assured when shipping products in Tower containers. Customer feedback identified crucial gaps in the market – gaps that have now been filled with the launch of the KTM42D and the KTE.
The company has continued to invest to drive its growth strategy, with UK staff numbers doubling over the last three years and its fleet of rental containers increasing from 300 to nearly 3,000 in the last 18 months. And aside from the opening of its new 26,000 sq. ft UK headquarters in Theale, Reading, the company has also seen success in the United States, Germany, Belgium, South Africa, and China, coinciding with the on-going expansion of its global hub networks to maximise proximity and availability for Tower customers in all regions.
