- 2020 International Trade
Brogan Group is a specialist access contractor to the construction industry, operating in the UK, Ireland, UAE and Saudi Arabia. It was founded in 1986 by James Brogan, a teenager who went into scaffolding, initially as a summer job, and who – after six years working for other companies – ended up starting his own business.
After rapid growth in the UK, Brogan Group expanded to Ireland in the early 2000s; to the UAE in 2009, and most recently, to Saudi Arabia. The company’s performance in international trade expansion led to its inclusion within the Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200 in 2019. This year it ranked 65th – one of Britain’s top 200 privately owned companies with the fastest growing international sales.
During the period 2016-2018, the company experienced 158% international growth. By 2018, 37% of sales came from overseas markets and by 2023, international sales are expected to account for almost 50% of Group turnover.
The company has always focused on being a knowledge-leader, developing its own people, hiring the best in the business, and ultimately, on growth. Clients are consistently impressed with the skill and reliability of Brogan’s workforce, its engineering expertise, and the knowledge-based business approach of its management.
Brogan Group pioneered the widespread use of system scaffold and diversified into powered access solutions, including construction hoists and mast climbers. This culture of innovation continues to evolve. Another first came with common user towers in 2018, the first of which was used in combination with bespoke hoists, including “Colossus” – the largest hoist in the UK – to build the 53-storey Madison Tower in Canary Wharf.
As part of its intense focus on training and promoting staff from within, Brogan Group set up a dedicated training centre and an IPAF training centre, both of which offer industry-accredited construction courses.
The company is currently working at the largest construction project in Europe, Battersea Power Station, where it has supplied 70 construction hoists, common towers, scaffolding and mast climbers on the first three phases.
Brogan Group also specialises in complex access solutions. It has been involved in several challenging projects, including supporting the iconic Ha’penny Bridge in Dublin, and in London on the construction of the elliptical-shaped Cocoon at the Natural History Museum, and the Sky Garden on top of the Walkie Talkie tower. The garden’s specialist roof fin structure required extensive scaffold support to be built overlooking the Thames, some 150m above ground level.
More recently, the company secured several contracts for World Expo 2020. This is the largest construction project in the UAE, a region which accounts for a major portion of the Group’s international growth. Among a number of complex projects undertaken here was ‘Capital Gate’. Known locally as the ‘Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi’, this
35-storey-high skyscraper is designed to incline 18° to the west, a feature which presented a significant challenge to the Brogan team.
Commenting on the award, Wayne Smith, Brogan Group Director (who was tasked with the company submission) said: “Naturally, we are delighted to have been recognised with the Queen’s Award for International trade. Kudos to our international teams, who have all contributed to both our success and our position as the market leader. Brogan Group is proof that whilst innovation drives success, it is a company’s core values that will ensure sustainable growth.”
