SBG Sports Software UK Limited is honoured to be recognised with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation for its RaceWatch software system. Widely used in Formula 1 and other elite motorsport series around the world, RaceWatch is an integrated video, data analysis, visualisation and race strategy system for teams and race organisers.
Formula 1 teams are continuously chasing marginal gains, and effective race strategy is a major component in achieving success. Accurate and clearly presented data analysis is vital when critical decisions are being made in seconds. RaceWatch provides exactly this, integrating multiple data feeds and extracting the key information needed at each stage of the race. It provides hundreds of visualisation options, which can be personalised by each user, with video forming a central component of the system.RaceWatch development began in 2008 when SBG founder Gareth Griffith attended the Monaco Grand Prix with Honda Racing F1. He saw first-hand how overloaded the strategists were with different numeric displays, sometimes overlooking the actual race and missing crucial events. Drawing on his experience developing television graphics systems (which have earned two previous Queen’s Awards), Griffith set to work to develop a comprehensive visual strategy system tightly integrated with video.
In 2009, in the team’s first full year of operation with RaceWatch, they won the Formula 1 World Championship as Brawn Grand Prix.
In 2010, Brawn GP became Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, and SBG has continued to work closely with the team ever since, through five more F1 World Championship wins. In recent years Renault, Alfa Romeo, Haas and Williams F1 teams have also become valued customers, as well as many teams in Formula E and the World Endurance Championship, including Porsche Motorsport, Audi Sport and Toyota Motorsport, all World Champions, and winners of the world famous Le Mans 24-hour race over the last eight years.
Alongside real-time decision making, RaceWatch is equally reknowned for its post-event analysis tools. All data, and every display, can be viewed exactly as it was at any given point in a session. This makes RaceWatch a best in class performance analysis application as it enables every decision to be analysed based on the exact information available at the time. Detailed review of communications and subsequent refinement of team procedures have played a significant role in making Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport such a successful trackside operation.
It is this ability to review data, video and radio communications in such detail which led to RaceWatch being adopted as the primary race management and incident review system for FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) World Championships. RaceWatch systems have been used to manage races safely and officiate with consistency in Formula 1 since 2011, and are now also used in all Formula E and World Endurance Championship races.
The use of data for performance analysis is growing rapidly in other sports with elite organisations increasingly looking to Formula 1 for guidance. Over the past two years SBG has established strong positions in several other sports including the Premier League and a host of international football and rugby leagues and federations, and has begun to develop similar applications outside sport.
