Bitrez is proud to have been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category for Curaphen. This is a bisphenol A (BPA)-free phenolic resin that is utilised in specialist lacquers employed in the coating of food and drink packaging.
Bitrez manufactures a range of high-performance synthetic resins and matrix systems, applied in specialist protective coatings, aerospace, defense, automotive and the construction sector.
A British company with an increasing global reputation for resolving problems and providing innovative products, the business is poised for significant expansion on the back of its technical expertise and outstanding reputation.
While BPA-based systems were the accepted coating of choice for the food and drink industry, with no negative issues surrounding their use, by the mid-2000s this changed due to a worldwide health scare and associated media coverage over the potential harm caused by BPA, particularly to expectant mothers and babies.
Although not universally banned, there was a strong possibility that BPA could be eliminated from some areas due to future legislative changes and media pressure.
In 2013, after several years of research, development, testing, trialing and rapid scale-up, Bitrez launched Curaphen as an alternative to BPA-based grades, for use with non-epoxy-based systems. Not only did Curaphen satisfy new regulations, but it also offered desirable processing and performance properties.
In the past five years Bitrez’s exports have increased and the company has doubled its capacity, necessitating a change to a 24-7 operation to ensure it can continue to meet with increasing demands.
Paul Jones, Bitrez Ltd Managing Director and formulator of the product, says: “I’m delighted that Bitrez has won the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise, especially in the innovation category. Resolution of regulatory and technical problems is at the heart of our business strategy and commitment to product development. This is what drives us to continue to design products like Curaphen.
“Being able to manufacture an alternative to conventional BPA derivatives, with equivalent performance, is a great example of the positive impact creative chemistry and ingenuity can have on our lives. This award celebrates everyone at Bitrez who worked so hard to bring the product to market, as well as the loyalty of our much-valued suppliers and customers who trust in our expertise and commitment to develop innovative products to comply with regulatory reform.”
Bitrez have an enviable reputation for innovation, and last year alone launched a further series of products to market, including the world’s first REACH-compliant ketamine epoxy curing agents and Curabox – flame retardant thermoset resins used in aerospace and other advanced composites.
Bitrez also offers toll conversion and the use of its facilities. Its manufacturing plant, which is COMAH [Seveso] and ISO 9001/14001/18001 compliant, comprises numerous reaction units from 3000 – 30,000 litre capacity. Its team of highly qualified and experienced chemists can produce materials from laboratory scale through to commercial manufacture. Bitrez also won Manufacturer of the Year 2019 at the Chemicals Northwest Awards.
