Toby Churchill Ltd gives speech to those who cannot speak for themselves.

One person in every 2,000 people has a medical condition that denies speech, even though the person has the cognitive ability to formulate words.
For some, the cause of loss of speech is a condition that has been present since birth - such as cerebral palsy. For others, a stroke or brain injury causes loss of the facility to formulate speech.
Toby Churchill Ltd designs and manufactures 'Lightwriters', which are portable units that can generate synthetic speech. A Lightwriter displays words on a screen for the user and for his conversation partner. The Lightwriter then speaks the words. It can send the words as a text message to a mobile telephone, or send a voice message to a landline telephone. A Lightwriter stores phrases generated by the user. Its word prediction system is based on the user's own choice of vocabulary and is sensitive to grammar. The capacity of a Lightwriter can store a complete book, if that is what the user wishes.
Toby Churchill Ltd employs 35 staff, all based at our factory near Cambridge. Product development is in-house. An R&D Department of 11 staff look at user needs, write the software and design the PCB and other hardware in the Lightwriter.
The new style Lightwriter, model SL40, is manufactured by Toby Churchill Ltd in thirteen languages, Arabic being the most recent addition to the suite of languages.
Medical conditions and accidents have no boundaries. There is a demand for our product across the world. With our network of overseas distributors, we export to 23 countries. Our turnover has risen to £4.5m pa, 70% of which is exported.
